Bylaw: A law that is passed and enforced by a local authority, as per the powers given to that authority
Constituents: Residents, property owners and business owners in a municipality. This is generally know as those who are eligible to vote in a municipal election
First-term: Someone who is newly-elected to office and is within the first term (four year cycle in Ontario)
Incumbent: Someone who is currently holding office. In the context of elections, incumbent means someone who is running for re-election
Nomination Period: A date range where all those who wish to run for municipal office must file their application with the clerk. E.g., 2022 Election Nomination Period is May 2 to August 19 (2pm)
Levy: An amount of money charged and collected
Resolution: A record of a municipal council’s decision on an issue and the action(s) to take relating to that issue
